Acne Scars

Acne normally varies between quite mild to extremely severe. In mild cases of acne, you may have just a couple of blotches and possibly 1 or 2 scarring marks. But, in the case of severe acne, it will possibly appear on the face, neck, shoulders, chest and back.

In severe acne, deeper than normal cysts and pustules may be present and if they aren't attended to properly, scarring is a common result. These scars are likely to be with you for a lifetime. Depending on the location of scarring, it may have a affect on your future self-confidence and personal view of your body.

Of course if you have severe acne, is it a foregone conclusion that you will have scarring? NO! You have the control over of how much scarring occurs from your acne.

One of the biggest keys to avoiding acne scars is NEVER to pick or squeeze acne blotches/pimples because it may lead to acne scarring as well as the spreading of the bacteria. So, instead of squeezing, look to some of the great products on the market that will help remove the harmful bacteria and prevent scarring altogther.

Some of the products available contain common and not so common herbs like lavender, chamomile, dandelion root, poke root, bergamot, Echinacia, burdock root and witch hazel. These products tend to reduce the toxicity of the acne bacteria and some will also enhance the appearance of your skin.

The next most important key is to stay out of the sun. The sun can dry out your acne which may be want you want but over a long time or during short prolonged exposure (sunburn), the sun will do more permanent damage to your skin and possibly make your acne worse.

Your acne scars can be categorized into three diffent classifications. They are: ice pick, boxcar, or rolling.

The ice pick acne scars are thin and sharp scars. These scars look as though the skin has been sliced with an ice pick. The scars typically have deep but narrow scars that extend into the deep dermis or subcutaneous layer of the skin.

Boxcar scars do not taper to a point like ice pick scars but instead are round pits which have sharp vertical sides. These scars can often be corrected with skin resurfacing tactics like laser resurfacing or dermabrasion for shallow scars. Deeper scars may not be completely removed but can be lessened using these treatments.

Finally, rolling acne scars typically look like a rolling or heaving surface. They are often the result of folds in the skin at the subcutaneous tissue level. These scars are treated by breaking up the fibrous bands that have caused the skin to roll or fold in the first place. A common method of doing this is to use a subcutaneous incision.

While there are treatments for many of the less severe scars, it is far better to prevent the scarring in the first place.
