Acne Causes

Although Acne is a very common, chronic skin condition, it's exact cause isn't 100 percent solved. However, most medical professionals believe that acne is a product of multiple factors where rising hormone levels is one of the most significant.

Based on current research, hormones called androgens can trigger the formation of acne as the sebaceous glands in the skin are enlarged. The androgens then cause these oil-producing glands to increase sebum or oil production. This in turn leads to the formation of plugs and serves as fod for the acne-causing bacteria.

These androgen hormones are present in men and women and begin surging at puberty corresponding with the development of armpit and pubic hair, facial hair and voice changes.

The other part of the equation is a bacteria that normally lives on the skin. The bacteria is called Propionibacterium acnes. Based on some studies, acne develops from the substances emitted from the bacteria and triggers redness and inflammation in the skin. Additionally, the bacteria also make enzymes which dissolves the sebum or oil into an irritating substance that makes the inflammation worse.

Femine hormones, called estrogens, also play a large role in acne development (especially in girls). As a woman's monthly menstrual cycle changes so does the levels of estrogen in their bodies. This explains why many women tend to have a cycle to their acne episodes as it also comes and goes. In many cases, physicians will recommend birth control pills to even out the estrogen levels across the month.

It's also possible that acne can be attributed to genetic factors. In some cases, acne has been known to run in some family trees. It seems somewhat logical to assume that if a parent had bad acne, then you may also have a similar experience. Often times, genetics are used as an excuse not to fight acne.

There are other possible causes of acne that aren't blamed as frequently as the above causes. They are stress, cosmetics, medication and diet. Although they are normally minor factors, they also can be a serious skin aggravator. Diet and stress will often not cause acne to form, they will definitely aggravate the skin condition.

Since there isn't any particular easy answer for the cause of acne, it is often best to find the solution that works best for you. And, as always, it is recommended to consult with your physician prior to starting any treatment course.
